Work, Driving and Osteopathy

Your health at work

Habitual poor posture can contribute to daily aches and discomfort in the workplace and beyond. Whether you work at a desk or have a more manual occupation, your job may expose you to stresses and strains that can cause you pain.

Common causes of strain in the workplace can include:
  • Prolonged sitting at a desk
  • Driving long distances
  • Awkward lifting and carrying
  • Overstretching
  • Bending
  • Extended periods of repetitive motion
  • Using a computer without taking breaks
These can lead to various aches and pains, and other common musculoskeletal conditions such as sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow. Furthermore, workplace stress can increase the amount of pain you feel by causing muscle tension and spasms.

"Thanks Angela for fitting me in to your busy schedule today at short notice. After originally going to the clinic five years ago you remain my practitioner of choice for any musculoskeletal issues. A busy couple of weeks working at my desk, my spine was ready to give in.
First class treatment as usual. The trigger pointing was extremely effective. Great nutritional and aftercare advice too. Always the conscientious, skilled professional who takes their time in assisting in your needs. Highly recommended!"

Keeping healthy at work

These simple tips can keep you healthy at work and avoid unnecessary strain on your muscles and joints:
  • Take regular short breaks away from your desk to help with any back, neck or eye strains that may occur
  • Your computer screen should be set so that the top of the monitor is level with your eyes. Adjusting your chair and display will make it more comfortable for your neck and upper body.
  • Ensure you are lifting properly and with help if it is not safe. Always keep whatever you are lifting as close to your body as possible. Your knees should be bent to make your legs do the work. Keep your feet and back straight avoiding any twisting and turning.
  • Ensure you are in a comfortable position when driving. Taking regular breaks when driving longer distances. We would recommend stopping at least once every two hours.

"They have kept me and my bad back in work and mobile for over 25 years. Without Angela I would not be able to work or walk some days! Thanks Angela and all the clinic."

How can your Osteopath help?

We are highly trained, healthcare professionals, experts in the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles and associated tissues) and its relationship to other systems of the body. Osteopathic care is based on the individual needs of the patient and so varies depending on your age, fitness levels and diagnosis. We can provide you with an off work certificate if you do need to take time off from work. You can discuss with your osteopath the impact work may have on your body and agree on an appropriate course of action that may help. Along with hands-on osteopathic treatment, we can offer advice on posture, lifting and workplace ergonomics.
